Volume 1, Chapter 17 – The Gamble of Heaven and Earth (1)

Linlang looked at the seat opposite her which is now empty.

On the table, the wind turned the page of the small journal. She smiled faintly. But even she knew that this smile of hers contains a lot of bitterness.

Because Hailan asked her who she was, how could she tell her that she came from Xi Liang, a country that existed in Yuncang Continent like Dongling?

Because as Hailan now travels to Dongling, Xi Liang no longer existed.

Hundreds of years ago, this country was sealed by the young Emperor of Xi Liang — Long Wushuang¹, and this once a great empire disappeared overnight. Outsiders who come to approach the border of Xi Liang will only see frost and snow all over the sky. Its temperature is so low that as soon as people step in, they will immediately freeze to death.

People from other countries of the Yuncang continent all thought that the people of Xi Liang had long since died. Nobody knew that Xi Liang would live and prosper in this snow country under the spell cast by Long Wushuang. The poeple here were not afraid of the cold, but could not leave the country. Conversely, no one could get in. Long Wushuang only brought a very small number of people to the heavens and were transformed as immortals. Nian Linlang was one of them.

Long Wushang has the ability protect and lock his country in snow because this young lord is actually the son of the Heavenly Emperor Long Feili. He inherited his father’s powerful spiritual power at birth, and also received his assistance.

Long Feili in his first life was Long Hao, the Dragon King of Xi Hai, and later reborn as the ruler of the Xi Liang Kingdom. After the tribulations of his lifetime, he passed the throne to his only son, Long Wushang, and returned to the Heavenly Realm with his wife, Xiao Qi, to become the new ruler of the Heavenly Realm.

The reason that Long Feili and Long Wushang had frozen Xi Liang is because hundreds of years ago, a big change occurred in the Heavenly Realm. The three main Buddhas of Heaven thought that Long Feili was ruthless and had a cruel temperament thus he did not deserve his position. With the assistance of several ambitious gods and goddesses of the Heavenly Realm, they abetted many the others to join forces against Long Feili.

Long Feili’s position as emperor of the Heavens is only supported by the ancestor of the Ten Thousand Buddhas Fei Tian. However, at that time, Fei Tian was down at the mortal world to experience a calamity. A Buddha is said to be compassionate because has gone through the human suffering. Thus, Fei Tian needed to experience the full nine by nine² calamities before he can return to the heavenly realm.

In the absence of Fei Tian, most of the other Buddhas remain neutral, only Xiushu³ Buddha stood by Long Feili. Seeing that the heavenly realm is in chaos, Long Feili suppressed it with iron and blood. This new emperor, who has long seen that the three opposing Buddhas the intention to seize not just the throne of the emperor, but also the position of Fei Tian by taking advantage that he is away experiencing his calamity.

Long Fei Li is cold, indifferent and heartless. He only loves his wife Zi Su to the bone. However, Zisu was reborn as Zhu Qi, and was born in modern China which is not in the same time and space as Long Feili’s incarnation in Xi Liang.

Fei Tian is compassionate and unpredictable. And when Long Feili’s incarnation went through the calamity, he defied all the gods and Buddhas, force to rule out public criticism and through Xiushu Buddha he gave the Niguang Journal to reverse time and space. The Niguang journal was given to the Snow Wolf King, who loves Xiao Qi so much and he lead Zhu Qi through thousands of years of time and space to reunite with Long Feili.

Long Feili promised to repay Fei Tian’s favor, hence when Fei Tian went temporarily away, he ensured that the he will not just lose the throne, but will also defend the position of Fei Tian.

But later, the war between Gods and Buddhas shook heaven and earth.

Notes:

[1] 龙无霜 (Long Wushuang) the son of Long Feili and Nian Xuanji. The characters of his name wu shuang meant “no frost” which is ironic but also quite fitting that he is now guarding a world full of frost and snow

[2] 九九 (nine by nine) basically it is written like in multiplication table. So 81 calamities allude to the MCs 81 tribulations from one of the most famous classical novels, Journey to The West.

[3] 秀殊 (xiu shu) the characters mean elegant and unique — this is the name of the Buddha who is the subordinate of Fei Tian. We’ll read more from this character much later

[4] 铁血 (tie xue) in war, this is translated as iron and blood meaning swords and sacrifice. But it can also mean iron blood which means cold bloodedness. Because Long Feili is also described as someone 铁血柔情 (tie xue rou qing) or iron blood, tender feelings; very very ruthless to anyone except Xiao Qi. So I guess it can mean iron and blood and iron blood.

[5] What was written here is actually Xiao Qi. But to actually make a difference (since she really was nicknamed Xiao Qi because she is the 7th daughter of the previous Heavenly emperor) and punctuate the modern reincarnation, I changed it to her actual modern name which is Zhu Qi.

[6] 逆光 (niguang) means backlight or rear light – You can all remember this if you came from Tyrant. This was the one that comes with Xiao Qi when she transmigrated to Xi Liang with the records of the Yuncang Continent.

[7] If you can remember the blue-eyed man who is actually Xue Liujing (who were split into 3 different incarnations: Bai Zhanfeng, Bai Zixu, and Lin Sheng) Our wolfie from Tyrant.

    1. Yes! I will try to summarize these chain of events in the notes in the subsequent chapters (with some spoilers); because these xianxia chapters are really really complicated but they are really connected to Hailan’s first life (and Qin Ge, too)

For the character names, I will write in a Character Sketch but I shall do it as I go because the descriptions are full of spoilers.
